Exclude pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys, swapfile.sys when backup a system disk/volume to a file
When Windows creates pagefile.sys it typically makes it a "large" size – usually the size of RAM installed on your machine. For example on the machine I’m using now I have 8 gigabytes of RAM, and sure enough:
Pagefile.sys is the "swap space" created by Windows to use the Windows virtual memory. Windows virtual memory allows applications to use bigger memory space than the real physical memory space. When the Windows system runs low on RAM because some applications is taking too much memory, the recently unused 'memory pages' may be moved out of the RAM to the 'Pagefile.sys' file. Using this way, the current running applications can get more RAM. For example, if an application is not running and its window is minimized for a while, and other running applications requires a lot of RAM, Windows will swap the memory used by the minimized application into the pagefile.sys.
The content Pagefile.sys is temporaries. After rebooting, the data on the Pagefile.sys will be invalid.
The hiberfil.sys is the file which record the system state, such as memory, before Windows goes into hibernate mode. The contents of hiberfil.sys would be rebuild before going into hibernate stable.
The file, swapfile.sys, is a special swap file for Windows 8 above.
All the files, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys are temporary files. Their contents of these files would be invalid and need to be rebuilt before rebooting or going into hibernate state.
So, the contents of files, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys, are not necessary to be backup during system backup. Without the contents of the files, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys, Windows state will not be changed and affected. However, without backing the files, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys, the image file size can be reduced sharply. On some computers the total size of the files, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys, are more than 15GB. The drive image file of Lazesoft program is compressed by default, the final deduction size of drive image when excluding the files, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys, can be 1.5GB to 5GB.
In the v4.1 version of Lazesoft Recovery Suite, the files, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys, are excluded by default when backing up disk/partition to a drive image file.
Lazesoft Recovery Suite is easy to use, powerful boot disk design to Recover Data, Recover crashed Windows System, Recover Windows Password, Clone or Backup Disk, etc.
