Fix 'Operating system not found'

If when you boot your PC,  you get the error message 'Operating system not found', please relex, you do not need to worry. Your data still is in your hard disk. Let us go thourght the following steps to fix the problem, make your Windows boot normally again.

If in any case you have booted your PC and you get the error message, “Operating System cannot be found” just relax and no need to worry.  The data is still stored in your hard disk.  Just go through the following steps to fix the problem to make your Windows boot normally.

There are serveral reason can cause the error 'Operating system not found'.

There are various reasons that can trigger the error Operating system cannot be found

  1. Incorrect BIOS (basic input/output system ) setting.

    The BIOS does not detect the hard disk

    BIOS is setted boot from a non-bootable device at first, such an USB disk

  2. Damaged hard disk
  3. Wrong partition information on hard disk.

    No active partition on disk

    broken Master Boot Record (MBR)

    An incompatible active partition

Three easy solutions to fix the problem

Solution 1. Make sure your BIOS setting is correct

Press the approciate key, commonly F2 and DEL, to enter into the BIOS setup when booting your computer. Looking at the on-screen instruction, BE SURE that your hard disk is recognized and setted to be the first boot device in boot sequence.

Solution 2. Use Windows Recovery Console

If your opearing system is Windows XP and you have a Windows XP installation CD, boot from the installation CD.

Here are the detailed steps:

  1. Insert your Windows XP installation CD to your CDROM or DVD drive.
  2. Set BIOS or use the boot menu to boot your computer from the CD.
  3. At the welcome screen of the installation CD, press 'R' to enter the Windows Recovery Console
  4. Once the Recovery Console is launch, the console find and list the Windows operating system on your hard disk. Select the Windows operating system you need to fix and input the administrator password. (The administrator password is blank by default)
  5. Type fixmbr and press Enter to fix MBR on your hard disk.
Note: The fixmbr tool may damage your partition information. We recommend you backup your data before you use this tool.

 

If your opearing system is Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista and you have a Windows installation DVD, boot from the DVD to try to fix the problem.

Here are the detailed steps:

  1. Set the BIOS to use the CD/DVD drive as your first boot device.
  2. Inset your Windows installation DVD and boot your Windows from it.
  3. When booting from the DVD, on the welcome screen, choose "Repair your computer", not "Install now".
  4. Select the operating system after the installer searches for Windows installation, and click "Next".
  5. Then click "Startup Repair". It will automatically try to find and fix problems.

Solution 3. Use Lazesoft Recovery Suite Free Edition (Home Edition)

  1. Downlooad and set up Lazesoft Recovery Suite. Launch it and use it to build a bootable CD or USB flash disk.
  2. Boot from the burned disk.
  3. Enter Windows Recovery and choose your Windows installation.
  4. Click the <Fix MBR> button to fix the MBR on your disk.
