My computer crashed. I get the error message: “A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart”, how can I fix the problem?
Technically, this error message comes from your computer’s volume boot sector. When rebooting a MBR based computer, the BIOS reads and runs the MBR boot code. Then the MBR finds an active partition, reading and running its boot sector code. After that, the active partition boot sector code tries to read the system boot file. If the boot sector code fails to read the sectors of a boot file, it reports the error message, “A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart”.
A few errors may cause the boot sector code to fail to read the boot file sector and report the error “A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart”.
- Bad sector
- Bad memory
- Damaged volume boot sector
In order to fix the error, “A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart”, you can try the following steps:
- Make sure the computer is set to boot from a non-bootable device, such as a non-bootable USB disk or CD/DVD.
- Fix the boot sector using the Lazesoft Recovery Suite boot disk->Windows Recovery->BootCrash->Fix Boot Sector.
- Check the disk error using the Lazesoft Recovery Suite boot disk->Disk Image & Clone->Check Disk
- Check the memory using the Lazesoft Recovery Suite boot disk-> Windows Recovery->Check Memory
